As one of the finest government school in the country, Polytechnic University of the Philippines diversifies the realm of intricate industry that our society recalls for.

Thanks to those respective tax payers who subsidize each student of the University.

Hindrance is no exemption in every goal inspired unto inquisitive and intellect mind of PUPians and that proves that every subsidy allocated to them were justified and worth paying for.

ELyza Mae Villarde Alcazar, a 3rd year Broadcast Communication Student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines shares her insights and gratification as “iskolar ng bayan”.

Aside from the mere fact of having low tuition fee, Elyza stressed the quality education given to her by the University, not just the implementation of the Professors who are not just bookworms but are disciples of showing the reality that awaits them.

All the way from Sta. Maria, Bulacan, Elyza struggles with her 2-hour traverse to acquire knowledge from the University, nonetheless she enjoyed every production that their class had and her active membership of an organization.

“ Productions have been the most essential thing na naexperience ko dito, bukod sa mageenjoy ka, mafafamiliarize ka pa sa mga tasks, kung baga may edge ka na sa iba ‘pag nasa field ka na..” she answered.

Being part of the state school, she was also once a participant of rally during her freshman year; she respects the advocacy of the activists and has a queer eye unto their academic protests.

But just as any ordinary student, this teen-age girl is fascinated with magazines, a television fanatic, that render her magnificent favorite basketball and football superstars!

“For basketball my favorite local teams were Air 21 and San Miguel, I’m also an addict fan of UAAP! Sa football naman Manchester United (England) bested by Cristiano Ronaldo..” she continued.

I have no doubt about it when this lead to her answer, “Sports Journalist” when I asked her what she sees in herself five years from now.

Now we can have another future professional molded and crafted by talented and well-defined professors provided by our very own Sintang Paaralan, home of many infamous graduates in different professions.

A Profile of a PUP Student

Nothing compares to any other school what the Polytechnic University of the Philippines can give to their students. Providing the lowest tuition fee that’s the record of paying 12 pesos per unit with the average of 300 pesos per semester. Imagine this; a PUP student spends not less than a thousand pesos for one academic year.

But what does 12 pesos per unit of education can provide you exactly? Let’s find out by venturing into the life of a typical “Iskolar ng Bayan”.

It was a sunny Tuesday morning at the College of Communication Building when I came across with Ms. Jemelyn D. Ambrosio, a third year student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication.

I asked her what her program teaches her, she replied “they teach me about broadcast communication obviously, production work like theater and some technical matters, etc.” Following up by checking on her lifestyle and said that it fits her very well.

Knowing more about the program, I asked her about the professors, she exclaimed, “well, most of them attends their classes regularly and some of them are just truant.” That leads me into questioning how well do they know about the subjects they are teaching, she said, “most of them are well-informed; they know what they’re teaching”

Looking through the rooms, I’ve noticed that some of it are rather obsolete, dilapidated, so I’ve asked Ms. Ambrosio the condition of the facilities they are using. She said, “Some rooms have poor ventilation, some have none at all, lights are just the same. Some rooms have none, most still have their lights running but maybe half of it.” Looking again, indeed ventilation and lighting are poorly allocated in the rooms, some of them are just flickering and some students are rather prepared with the situation of the ventilation. They carry their own fan for a little grasp of air.

Now it’s bothering me to ask about the safety of the premises, so she said that she feels fine about the security and it doesn’t bother her at all. Therefore, she feels safe.

After asking her questions about her school, and her chosen program, I moved on by asking questions more about her. First was the reason why she chose PUP? She said, “I didn’t pass the UPCAT so it was my only choice, I passed the quota for UP Los Baños but my parents won’t let me.”

Moving on with the questions, I asked her how is she coping up with her studies, she firmly said that all you need to do is study and be a real student. It won’t hurt if you just get yourself ready with the challenges and surprises ahead. Just become a real student. It applies to all.

Knowing all these things, maybe we can say that a PUP student is just like any other students out there – disregarding the very low tuition fee they are paying to study.

I guess we can say that they are blessed, having the luck of being given the opportunity to study in college without the hassle of paying much for their education. Giving them the chance to make their dreams into reality and being able to provide for their families. Little souls who have the biggest luck in the Philippines, or the world!

In the current situation we are in, having the chance to be nurtured by PUP is already a great blessing to the students studying in it.

A little money and much hard work will go a long way in this University. Which gives more hope to those who are still dreaming to go far to achieve their dreams.

Beauty, Talent, Intelligence: All in One!

Low tuition fee and the quality of education it has to offer. These are the two main reasons of those students who chose to study in The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and one of these students is Carla Shane Cruz Andaya. She is famously known as “Cai” in the College of Communication. Living in Valenzuela with her parents and brother older than her and a sister younger than her, Cai has been trying her best to finish her degree in Broadcast Communication though it is taking her two hours before she get in the university for her daily classes. She has been dreaming to take this degree ever since she is a child.

She is no ordinary student. She study hard not because she wants to be a cum laude when she graduates. She is a scholar by heart. Unknowingly to everyone who knows her, she is doing her best just to maintain her scholarship. Having this scholarship is her own little way in helping her parents as well as her self to pursue her dream. She even had an experience working in a call center company just to earn money for her studies but end up paying the hospital bills of her sister who got sick.

You might imagine her as girl who is nerd with thick eyeglasses on her eyes. But I must say that boys should take this big “Beware” for she is a head turner type of a girl. She is a beauty with talents as well as wits making her as a total package. Guys will definitely say “wow!” when they see her. She’s even one of the candidates of the Mr. and Ms, College of Communication 2007.

People also love her because she has the talent that not everyone has. One way of proving that she has the talent, she’s been chosen to take a major role in their class presentation way back when she was still a second year student.

When she entered her junior year in the university she decided to join a certain organization. It's another burden for some students. Thinking that she is a scholar and should focus her time doing all the requirements regarding her academic activities, she considered this one as another challenge for her. According to Cai, now that she is a member of an organization, she can now feel the real meaning of what a college student. She said that it's tiring, but it's worth it.

Carla is really an interesting girl. She got almost everything but she is afraid of one thing that also served as one of the reason why she chose to study in PUP. Like any other student, she also tried to study in the University of the Philippines, unfortunately, she failed the entrance examination. A blessing in disguise that she can consider, if not for that she might not be here. I asked her why she didn’t take the risk to study in a private school. Her answer really amazed me in a way. She is afraid to mingle with rich people, which is not very usual to hear from a girl with her age.

She will be in Canada after she graduate. She doesn’t want to stay in the Philippines and she didn’t elaborate why.

She is really a girl of wits, of talent, and of beauty. A thing that she should be proud of for not every girl has the quality that she has.

People have different perspectives in life, on the things they do, why do they behave in such a way wherein some people don’t understand them, how they decide on something and in choosing a university. Just like what John Niña Andrade did a third year student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Sta. Mesa Manila, taking up Broadcast Communication.

For Niña, being a student of PUP is fun but sometimes boring, “well I guess it’s not being a student from PUP, that makes it boring but being a student itself—it’s a tough job”. She chose PUP among other universities for the reason that the tuition fee is low and before she made a decision, she first conducted a research about her chosen university and it surprised her, when she found out that the university she chose is one of the best here in the Philippines. She doesn’t have any regrets in her decision choosing for the reason that she hears a lot of positive comments about the state U, and that makes her proud to be a part of the so called “Iskolar ng Bayan”. Well if were in her shoes I’d be feeling the same thing as what the PUP tag line states “Pataasan ng Utak, Pababaan ng tuition” it’s not a mere form of fallacy, PUP is living up to it, proving how worthy its students are and PUP is accepting students from different walks of life—giving hope to those who have lost it.

She sees herself five to seven years from now as a PUP graduate and one of the desirable employees there can be. John Niña assumes that her life by then would be financially, emotionally, physically and morally stable. She believes that she has the security that she needs by that time, she wants to be in “THE” position in a respective and a well-known company and of course, earn a lot of money. Well, nobody knows, five to seven years is a very long time, many things could happen; yesterday you might be young and happy, today you might be alive and in love, tomorrow you might be dead. Not a soul in this world holds neither of our future, it’s unpredictable.

She rated PUP with an eight from a scale of one to ten, one as the lowest and ten as the highest. When she was asked why; she answered, “Though not the best, we’re better among others” a quotable quote given by her, that would definitely inspire other aspiring college students.

Ms. Andrade wants to be remembered by her alma mater as a hard worker and exerts efforts on everything that she does.

People are unique in different ways, manner, lifestyle, and how they run their lives. John Niña Andrade is one of those few who chose to run their lives together with PUP.

I was able to interview a broadcast communication student in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines named Hector Paule Aquino. A 19-year-old guy from Balsik, Hermosa, Bataan.
It has been 3 years since he studied in PUP. Here is how the interview goes.

I asked Mr. Aquino why he chose to study in PUP. He said, knowing the fact that PUP offers low tuition fee and it is not so good when it comes to facilities, he chose this university because he know it will enhance and cater his skills and expertise in order to achieve his goals. Aside from that, he said, he knows that he can acquire some knowledgeable things and wisdom that will lead him to a better student. And PUP provides quality education that is why the students here were called as “Iskolar ng Bayan” that he should be proud of. Lastly, he is confident to say that PUP is worth staying for although it lacks some educational facilities, the community, as a whole, for many decades of its existence, has always been supportive to the students. Then why take up this course? I said, he answered, I chose Broadcast Communication because I think it is my interest and I would like to be a part of the media industry soon. Of course, I want to develop my talent as well as my confidence that somehow, if I he will be given a chance, I would like to be a renowned broadcaster. In addition, I asked if he would like the idea of working while studying, he said no, because he want to settle everything and that his priority is his studies. He said that it is hard to balance his time, there are many sacrifices, and he does not want to experience that kind of situation. He said that you could not focus well on your studies if you will work while studying. So if he will have trouble in balancing school and work, his grades might suffer.

I asked Mr. Aquino if he want to take a Master’s Degree after finishing his Bachelor’s Degree. He said, Yes and No. Yes, because he want to broaden his knowledge and explore more things. He said no, because his family is expecting him to go to work after graduating in order for him to help them in their needs and because the time is running. When I asked him if he think that he had the right decision when he chose PUP, he proudly said, yes. I am proud to be a PUPian.
I asked him how he sees himself 5 years from now; he said that he is hoping that 5 years from now, he is having a stable job in a renowned company in the media industry.

Then I asked him, do you think that your parents are earning enough to provide your needs? He said, yes. Because aside from my parents, my uncle also supports me and he provides the things that I need in order for me to continue my studies although there are times that it is very hard for them to support me financially. For my final question, I asked him if he you plan to work on a job not related to his course if it will give you more earnings. Yes and No, he answered. Yes, because practically you will earn money in an easy way and No, because since from the very start he would like to be a part of the media industry, if not, at least related to communication.

So what’s with PUP?
PUP in the mind of a certified student

“The aim of education is, as should be, to teach people to educate themselves.” I read this line in one of the books that I have. After going through this statement, I realized some things; things that render the importance of an effective school and how it hones a person from an ordinary student to a productive and well-equipped citizen.

Ruelito B. Aristo is a Bachelor in Broadcast Communication student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. “Third Year na sa wakas, nasurvive naman yung campaign.” He was reminiscent of the happenings from the past that reminded him of the hardships and trials that they had to go through in order to reach the top with flying colors. When asked what his first impression of PUP is, he answered that he didn’t really have any idea of what PUP is, not until he finally became a student of the university. “Astig ang PUP” according to him because he would see the university being featured by different media companies and so on.

The existence of PUP had been very beneficial to those people who wanted to study but has little amount of money to suffice their schooling. The low tuition fee rates made Ruelito become aware of the university; together with the recommendations from his friends, schoolmates and other alumni. This also became a way for him to describe PUP and then stated that this is the distinction of PUP among any other university. My attention was easily tapped when he told me about the other fees that should be paid by the students. Nowadays, there are additional fees that the students must pay in order to be declared “enrolled” in the university. These fees somehow moved the stereotype of PUP being the most affordable school in the country but nonetheless, Ruelito still believed that the low tuition fee rate is still the trademark of PUP, with the statement “pababaan ng tuition, pataasan ng utak”.

Ruelito eagerly shared that “these past few days, several issues and mostly bad publicity continue to surround the university but behind these, I know that there is still some academic excellence that the university must be proud of.” He enthusiastically added the information about the PUP College of Communication being the first communication college in the Philippines to pass the Level lll Accreditation and this statement supported his decision to stay even if given the chance to transfer to any other school. Now that is really something to be proud of!

Anyone can comment about the real-life happenings around the campus but a certified student of the university would still have the authority to prove them all. Ruelito’s testimonial proved that the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is an institution that hones the students in a way that they would realize that you don’t only learn about relevant things when you are inside the four corners of the classroom but you learn through every aspect in your life. The university may not be as extravagant as any other existing schools of such description but it is closest to both bitter and sweet truths in all walks of life, and that is what’s essential.

Ms. Allison Anne Gray Atis. Name it! , where can you find an existing gray fruit in this century? But there’s still lots of things to explore about this 18 year old 3rd year Broadcast Communication student and why she stands out among others.

One fourth American Allison Anne is an active student leader. She’s the President of the BBrC 3-1 and also a member of some academic-organizations in COC. Being a student , at first her parents affected her decision in choosing the course to take up , until she realized that this is really what she wants and this is the one which really runs through her blood. She defines Broadcast Communication as a challenging course which she really wants to venture more. Ms. Atis also practically stressed that she personally chose to study here in PUP because it offers quality education in a low rate tuition fee.

It is also a common scenario inside the campus the load protest and several rallies. At first she became affected in a way but through time , she realized to put her own principles intact , and that’s how she overcome those experiences.

Live your life the way you want it!

A man’s life has full of mysteries. You can never tell what’s going to happen next. So the thing is, you should live every moment and day awarded to you by our Almighty God. Try to enjoy everything that you have and thank Him for all of that. Live your life to the fullest, because you’ll never know, you won’t be able to do again the things that you love.

An inspiring thought coming from a 3rd year Broadcast Communication student studying at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Monique Andrea Bagadiong believes that you shouldn’t think much about the future, because what matters most is your present life. She’s an 18 year old teenager residing at Las Piñas City. It’s quite amazing that she’s not the typical type of person who have a certain “Oh, This is what I want when I grow up.” She thinks that it’s not very concrete to say those. She believes in the reality that most people always had a change of heart whenever setting goals in life.

She followed her own will of choosing her career path, being a communicator. For the reason that she thinks, this is the most rational choice for her. She’s not like those students whose decision making ability is affected by what their parents want for them. Her parents allow her to choose what she really wants to do. Because they know it’s not them who’s going to surpass all the tests, it’s Monique. Like other people, she wants to have a typical office job in relation to what she had finished. But she know for a fact that our country is facing a serious crisis when it comes to giving appropriate jobs for the degree most of the fresh graduates had finished, so she’s striving hard to be able to attain that goal. She then emphasizes the concept of communication playing a vital role in the world and she wants to improve her skills in being an efficient communicator that’s why she chose Broadcast Communication in PUP. This is where she thinks she’ll get good chances of having a decent job after she graduates.

Life in PUP didn’t come that easy to this girl. Her long day starts with the usual routine like other students. Waking up early to be able to attend her 7:30 am class and she has to travel all the way from Las Piñas to Sta. Mesa. This is the reason why she doesn’t like professors who comes late in their classes. She’s thinking of the effort of the students to come early but because of that kind of behavior it comes to a waste. Those difficulties don’t just end there. She’s also having a hard time dealing with her fellow PUPians. She admits that some of them are nice and of course, some of them are not. Individual differences are her reasons for this which shows her consideration for uniqueness of every person.

With all those things that make her busy, she still finds a way to unwind. Unwinding even for a while is an important thing for us people. That’s why she makes it a point to rest. As simple as an ice cream treat for her will do and a nice long bath then off to her room to watch DVD. Such simple things complete her long and tiring day.

It’s quite strange for her to say that aside from her studies, one of her priorities in life is herself. She wants to make herself happy, because through that way then she would be able to do the same to others. Love yourself before others, which fit that statement. In connection to that, she actually tells that her ability to stay relaxed and her confidence has an edge over her classmates. Because she said that some of them just don’t know how to chill during stressed situations. It’s a good thing that we people know how to be cool especially when we are facing a lot of problems. Being impatient can’t help you solve any problems at all.

Monique knows how hard it is to gain a degree in studying. How much more if it’s multi-degree level? She also knows that those who had finished not just one degree in studying have an edge in the society today. So if ever she was given a chance to take another course, it would be photography according to her. She always wanted to indulge herself with such activity. But she knows that she can barely make money out of it. But for her, photography is just more of a hobby or a passion rather than a job. After she graduates, she still wants to take even just a crash course on photography.

All of those things make her life as simple or as usual as the life of other typical students. But as we all know, every human being is unique. The struggles and the obstacles in Monique’s life serve as spices that make her life colorful. That’s why she wanted to do the things she loves the way she want it to be. You should not let other people affect your goals and your aspirations in life. You should create your own style of living. It may look stereotype on the outside but it matters. So love and live your life the way you want it.

Proud TO BE “Iskolar ng Bayan “

Who will not be proud of being a scholar? Especially in our country – it has been always a “privilege” to study or go to school. And “lucky” to be a part of a government educational institution. Polytechnic University of the Philippines (P.U.P.) has been there, ever since, to give this “privilege” to thousands of young Filipino people who are “lucky” to pass the PUPCET.
I’ve had an opportunity to interview one of those “lucky” young Filipinos who have, or should I say having the “privilege” our government offers. I was able to ask him some questions and got me really thinking of how favorable things are to be A Proud Iskolar ng Bayan.

PROFILE:
Name: Bryan R. Bahena
Age: 18 years old
Department / Course: COC, Bachelor in Broadcast Communication (3rd Yr.)

P.U.P. his first choice - - - his only choice.
“… PUP was my first choice. I didn’t have any other choices because I took into consideration the socio-economic status of our family—we have an average income. Actually, I had anxieties of where I would study college if ever I fail the PUPCET—I didn’t take any entrance exams except in PUP.”

P.U.P. before --- P.U.P. now.
“I actually heard a lot about PUP. Well, personally, I’ve perceived it as state university where activism and other student movements are very much prevalent. Furthermore, I perceived it as an institution which renders quality education to the optimum.
“My perception hasn’t changed so far. My earlier perceptions and expectations were met—and I’m glad about that.”

Definitely not an ACTIVIST.
“Well, on my own point of view, I could say that student movement and activism are very much alive in the university. I should say that it is the iconic image of the university per se. I feel empathic for what they are fighting for but it stops there. I really find it insensible. Joining such never came into my thoughts—after all, I came to school to study and finish my degree—I want my parents to be proud of me.”

“I should say that PUP has thought me one non-academic lesson/virtue—independence. It was beneficial on my part for it made me mature on the way I deal with everyday affairs. I could also say it has made me adapt more easily when such pressuring circumstances, especially with studies, suddenly pop out.

“… I never had any regrets. I’m happy with the learning atmosphere in the university for freedom is just but everywhere—in all aspects for that matter.
“The same thing, I’m happy with the college/department. It rendered me everything that was necessary and essential as far as the course program was concerned. Freedom of choice is also practiced in the college. Well, after all, I considered it my second home—I’m happy with the course and the over-all status of the college per se.”

“Well, just like what I said, it’s the quality of education—it is patterned with global competitiveness—the university has produced a lot of excellent graduates in their respective fields of endeavor… that’s that one undeniable thing that I’m really proud of with the university.. “

The statement of Mr. Bahena, I believe, will not keep you skeptical about “being lucky” and “having privilege”. It is cracking to be “lucky” to have the “privilege”, indeed. I’m glad, like Mr. Bahena, I AM.

With the deteriorating economic status of the Philippines resulting to increase in prices of prime commodities; it is very difficult nowadays to live a decent life.

However, many people are still seeing hopes and keeping it alive through education. Many couples with their children and the old alike still strive to finish schooling.

So studying in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – the university on the Philippines with the lowest tuition fee rate, is not only a privilege but an edge as well as it gives its students high-quality education with just a small amount of money.

Subsidized by the government, fortunate students who passed the entrance tests only pay as low as P300 for their tuition fee and still assured of good education.

I had the chance to interview a PUP – College of Communication student in the name of Ms. Mariel Ratani C. Balitao, 17 years of age, Bachelor in Broadcast Communication, section III-1D to share her views of being a privileged “Iskolar ng Bayan.”

I believe that good affiliations bring good learnings. When asked if she is affiliated with any organization on the university she said, “I am a member of the CoC Powerhouse – The Official Debate Society of College of Communication.”

With regards to the issue of low budget leading to poor facilities and structures, she commented, “Though the facilities and structures here are not so modernized, I still prefer so study here. I believe it’s not on the facilities and structures, it’s on the students eagerness to learn.”

“The staffs and personnel are very accommodating. They are doing their best to help the students the way they can.”, she added to describe the staffs and personnel of PUP.

And if asked if PUP is conducive to her over-all learning as a college student, she stated, “It is conducive to my learning as a college student because it teaches me the lessons that I have to learn based on the academics plus it also gives mew a clear picture on the reality and practicality of life.”

And lastly, her message to her fellow “Iskolar ng Bayan”, “Seize the day! Enjoy every moment you have in your college so when you look back, you’ll have no regrets. Enjoy learning!”

Janine… that’s the more popular name where she’s been known of. Many say she’s the carbon copy of the Filipino bombshell “Joyce Jimenez” and has tagged her a sexy, sassy hot chick for that matter. Catching everyone’s attention with her exotic, effervescent look and perfectly shaped facial features and breath-taking body contours, she’s been the “dream girl” if not the ideal woman of almost every male in the campus. Surely, she has made a lot of males suffer from many sleepless nights—she’s been the culprit of the megalomania and paranoia of a lot of die hard suitors—one smile and it will surely blow you away.

But behind the good looks, lies a deadly, clever brain that will surely be more of the reason for her to be adored. Diligence and dedication to education—those are the values that have become part of her ideal and admirable personality. A certified “iskolar ng bayan” who embodies the true essence of a PUPian—she’s soaring high and has been exemplifying excellence in her field of endeavor as a communication student—a true and ideal epitome of a promising media practitioner.

Ana Janine J. Balois is a junior broadcast communication student of the PUP-College of Communication. For more than three years, she’s been fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a student though she has had proximity issues—she lives in the more southern part of the metro in Sucat, Parañaque. “I had hard times during the beginning. It takes me more than an hour and a half everyday—going to school and going home—the travel alone was very stressful. Pero nasanay din naman ako nang kalaunan., she says”.

As a PUPian, Janine has lived with the high expectations that have been superimposed to her, not only by her parents but also by other people, the fact that she’s a student of a highly comprehensive state university. “Of course I'm proud and feel blessed about it because I know that… I mean my parents are not spending that much for my education. And I also feel some burdens about it... because of the society's expectation (you know... when you say that you study in a state university to someone, that someone thinks he/she actually contributes something for your education).”, Janine said. Yet, she added that although the expectations were high, she’s challenged on proving her worth as a so-called “iskolar ng bayan”.

Janine had some good feedbacks when it boiled down to the quality of education being rendered by the university. She said that she’s actually satisfied and she’s getting the things that matter and those which were necessary; although she cited one negative, yet inevitable truth—some of the professors were not that effective. (she denied to expound further…)

It’s just but an undeniable truth that PUP has been the iconic image of radicalism and activism—the doctrine of student movements is but omnipresent in the campus. But Janine had some pessimistic yet neutral viewpoints for that matter. “Honestly, I find it so pathetic... I just ignore those kinds of things. It's not that I don't care but I think it is just not our part... I mean we're in school not for these stuffs.”, she said.

Janine describes her relationship with her professors/instructors “well”. She feels good about it but she insinuated that some were not that approachable and cared less for students. Either way, she added that academic freedom in the college was, in every way, “very well” exercised—in all spheres of the learning aspect.

Studying in PUP. Janine had to cope with the sad truth on the issue of poor facilities. Nonetheless, she had some positive hopes in the future—time will come that the government would finally hear the grievances of the student movements, and that state-of-the-art facilities would be given to the university in the not so distant future. Moreover, she added that she’s able to manage some harsh negative criticisms thrown to her university as far as the facilities and equipments were concerned. “Like what I've said, I know the university doesn't have that much budget but I have nothing to protest about it... (if you know what I mean).” In addition to that, she laughed when she was asked of PUP being a total university and, in a jolly manner, said that, “Ikaw bakla... ano sa tingin mo??? Tinanong mo pa 'to... adik ka!!!!”

The surprising revelation that Janine unveiled was that she had no plans of pursuing a career in the media industry. She said, “I don't think I would pursue that career... I envision myself working in a company as part of the Public Relations Department... something like that or a company researcher maybe.” But when she was asked of how she would reciprocate the things that her alma mater has rendered to her, she simply replied, “I don't have a definite idea, but I think I can make myself responsible for every action and choices I've made and I'll come up in the near future... so my alma mater won't be burdened about me... something like that. Yes, I think that's it... being responsible.” (a very witty, clever and practical answer)

It is but true—Ms. Ana Janine Balois is a student which embodies the truest essence of a responsible, ideal individual—one who puts into heart the significance of education in one’s life… her story and her viewpoints…? An empowerment to the whole PUPians and the youth sector as well.

Education Opens Doors

No single action can change a woman’s life for the better more than gaining a college education. Education is of benefit to everyone but is especially important for women to help level the playing field and open doors they often find closed to them without a degree. When deciding on your potential field of study, you are wise to consider several factors. First, realize you have a dream and that you desire to reach it. You would think this was the easy part... however for some; this can be the most difficult point to reach. Next is your second home; the University. But how can we assess the quality of education offered by a college or university? How can we know reliably whether or when learning is taking place?

I once interviewed a Mass Communication student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). I asked her some questions regarding her present life in PUP. Polytechnic University of the Philippines has a mission of providing the highest quality of comprehensive and global education and community services accessible to all students, Filipinos and foreigners alike. No doubt, PUP is providing quality students just like Monaliza Z. Barrientos.

Monaliza is a regular third year student of PUP, 18 years of age, and currently residing in Payatas A, Quezon City. Her mother wanted her to be a Nursing student while her father wanted her to take up Law but she really wanted to part of the Accounting world but, unfortunately, she wasn’t able to avail a slot so she decided to choose another course which is broadcasting. On the other hand, her family is supporting her all through out the way even though they are not satisfied with what she’s taking up right now. At first, it was very difficult for her to adjust because she took up the course that’s not really her choice. She chose Broadcast Communication because she has a background in Journalism since elementary. Mona studied in Batasan Hills National High School and she’s living with her parents in Payatas. Practically speaking, Mona chose to study in PUP because of low tuition fee. She doesn’t want her family to spend lots of money in her studies so she really strived hard to enter in PUP. Aside from having a low tuition fee, she had this impression in PUP that it is one of the most respected Universities in the Philippines. Lots of her neighbor wishes to study in PUP but unfortunately failed from PUP College Entrance Test.

As she enter the University, not all her expectations as well as impressions, met. According to her, the system inside the PUP is not really good. She does believe in most of the Professors in PUP are very reliable and a good proof that PUP is giving a quality education. “Kaso lang marami rin sa kanila ang nagiging dahilan ng pagka-discourage ng student. Tulad na lang ng mga Professors na tamad magturo, ang tendency nun ay tamarin na rin pumasok yung student, tapos ibabagsak nila, that’s unfair”, she added. The bottom line is that a good Professor plays a huge role in student’s growth and achievements so they should learn to persuade students well.

When it comes to lacking of facilities, she really pointed out that it is really a hindrance to the students to concentrate well in listening or studying. It makes the students uncomfortable. “Tulad na lang ng sumisingaw na cr na bongga sa panghi. Tapos yung kulang na mga chairs sometimes. Yung mga sumasabog na electric fans, hindi na nga aircon, delikado pa”, she said. She is also frustrated when it comes to resources matters. The 1:21 ratio of the computers and the inadequate supply of books in the library is really a hindrance to students’ success. She’s trying to say that the Administration of PUP is focusing on the outer part not on the inner portion of the school. Therefore, horrible facilities divert students to acquire high grades.

As we all know, PUP is well-known for its activist students. They are just creating vandals around the campus and nasty noise among the classes. Some of them don’t even know what they are shouting and fighting for. According to Monaliza, they are causing no good in the University; they hinder the University to grow. When I asked her about the unique qualities of PUP from other State Universities, her answer is like this: “Tayo ang nag-oofer ng mas maraming magaganda at indemand na courses, mababa ang tuition fee, maraming activists, maraming styles ng uniform, tayo rin ang nag-aalow ng student na maging malaya ng sobra na hindi na maganda. My last question to her is what she can offer in the progress of PUP. “I will bring change in the PUP through my inscriptions. Naniniwala pa rin ako na madadala pa rin ang karamihan sa mga nababasa nila at syempre sa pagiging mabuti ko na ring student. Hindi ko kailangan sumama sa mga rallies para lang humingi ng justice para sa kapwa ko student, kung hindi naman nakapag-dudulot ng maganda para sa karamihan. That’s all, Thank you!” she replied with courage in her face.

ONE PROUD PUPian

Polytechnic University of the Philippines—the nation’s cheapest university. It is an undeniable fact that studying in PUP is such a great privilege, not only because of its minimal tuition fee but also because of the credibility it holds—that PUP produces only the best, the smartest, and the most competent beings.

But who can hold true with these beliefs? Are the students of this generation still confident enough that they will have a bright future after graduating in this Alma Mater? To satisfy all these intricacies, I interviewed a PUPian and ask her feelings and opinions about this matter.

Ms. Via Camille Bernabe, 18 years old is a 3rd year student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication. “Actually my first choice was BS Tourism, but due to the height requirement I wasn’t able to pursue it. My classmates back in high school told me that I should take up mass communication because it is a course that requires not only the knowledge but also the skills. I found it interesting and challenging so I followed my friend’s advice and so here I am now, really looking forward in working in one of the country’s leading broadcast station,” said Ms. Bernabe. Moreover, her reason for choosing PUP as her training ground for her chosen career was the same as the reasons of many other PUPians, and that is mainly because of the very low tuition fee it offers but still has a good quality education. Her life and studying experience in PUP is also lived by any other ordinary students. “I reside in Pasig City that’s why at first I found it hard to commute everyday and rush myself everytime I am caught in a heavy traffic. But as time goes by, ayun nakasanayan ko na rin. PUP is not a quite university as we all know it. Students are very radical and they really fight for their rights. Rally dito, rally doon. But in my 3 years stay here, I didn’t find it hard to adjust in that kind of environment. I realized that you do not really need to join those rallies and be an activist. You have some alternatives: you can support them silently or just ignore them at all. Anyway, that is their right,” Ms. Bernabe elaborates.

In my interview with her, I also discovered more reasons to become a proud PUPian like her. Although the university does not have enough facilities to support the every need of the students, the PUP is constantly reminding everybody of how really life is. When you go out, you may see the train coming and so you’ll be more careful about your every steps. When you visit the mall with your friends, you will learn how to enjoy even without money. These are only some of the many examples and proofs of how it is great to study in PUP. Real life on real situations is what the institution is teaching everybody. Therefore, let us all be like Ms. Bernabe, very positive and very proud of being a PUPian and a PUP graduate in the near future.

Mikael Anjo Canlas is a 3rd year Broadcast Communication student from Polytechnic University of the Philippines. He thinks that being one of the “Iskolar ng Bayan” is one of the greatest gift he’d ever had when he chose PUP. It gave comfort to his mother financially.

Indeed all PUP students are grateful that they receive quality education at a low cost. For some being a PUP student is an achievement that they have to cherish in their lives. However, being a PUP student entails a lot of responsibility. When asked what others thought about you as a PUP student, he simply said “Usually people think that when you’re a PUPian, you’re brainy and all and for some being a PUPian, you’re one of the lowest and poorest people here on earth.

When I asked him what you can say about PUPians being compared to UPians, he just happily answered that it’s flattering. He said that every school has its own uniqueness. Mikael didn’t think that studying in PUP is hard. He just thinks that all the obstacles he is facing are part of being a college student. He said that those challenges molds him maybe not the best but a better person than he was before.

Some people say that PUP is the home of the activist. But for Mikael he just thinks that the students here are “too” intelligent to handle. When I asked him if he would be the President of PUP, what will he do to promote the university? He just said “I don’t have to do anything to promote the university. It’s a form of showing off. I’ll just concentrate on the other problems, I will make the students live up to the name “Iskolar ng Bayan” wherein they don’t have to pay anything.

New, exciting and truly memorable. That is how Ms. Marian Carpo described her PUP life. Now in her third year, Marian claimed that she had already learned a lot of things that books cannot suffice and at the same time, thankful to be exposed on the real world. College, for her, is full of personal and social realities of life.

Marian enrolled at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for what most PUPians looked for, that is, cheaper yet quality education. But how come that this cute little girl have gone a long way from Laguna to study in PUP Sta. Mesa? Well in fact, there exists a PUP branch in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Simply because they do not offer a Broadcast Communication course there, which seemed to be Ms. Carpo's passion and persuasion. Not to mention her obsession to be a part of the PUP society.

An average of one hour bus ride, Marian endures the triumphs, hardships and success of commuting. She once lived in her uncle's house in Quezon City and made it for just two weeks. Finding it hard living in someone else's house with limited actions and consequently missing home. She also tried boarding a house near the school and found herself missing her family like never before. By the way, Marian is a family-oriented individual who longs to be near her loved-ones for as much as possible. Such an affectionate sister and daughter.

When asked regarding the entrance exam, Marian didn't have a hard time going through it. She even ended up with a higher raw score, encouraging aspiring PUPians. Saying, PUP is a place where realities and opportunities will always be open as long as they take the right pathway to their dreams.
Not an activist, Marian is quite proud of PUP's reputation as the home of activists. Saying at least, it has its trademark and thanking the activists who are responsible for the stable tuition fee. "Being type casted as the home of activists proves how socially conscious most of the students are in PUP," says she.

A member of the Every Nation Campus Ministry (ENCM-formerly known as Youth on Fire), Marian is ashamed of being an inactive member. Said, she now realized she shouldn't have joined the organization and boldly admitted that she's bad at managing her time.

Also, Ms. Carpo hates teachers who teach for the sake of income itself without the dedication to be an influential professor. I couldn't agree more. I believe teaching should be done with passion, something deeper beyond the word teaching itself.

When asked, Marian doesn't care about the discrimination between the elite and the state university students. And pity those who are spending hundreds of thousands of peso as investment. A school nationalist, she strongly believes that state university students are still better, wiser and tougher in terms of resourcefulness and out-of-the-world experiences.

Marian who look so petite is ironically in love with eating. It probably plays a big part in stimulating her nerves. Watching TV, anime, movies, sleeping, and chatting also keep her away from any kind of stress.

Straying the PUP community for almost three years now, Marian have developed several virtues. One is to never think of yourself as someone that others will give importance to, but rather find someone whom you will give importance to. Another is the best use of life is love. The best expression of love is time, and the best time to love is now. And most convincingly, money is definitely important than boyfriend. Yes. I agree because for now, there are a lot more ways of enjoying ourselves even with the most effortless ways. . .

PROFILE OF A PUP STUDENT

Marjorie Cornillez knows how to work a room. It was a sunny afternoon and the sun was definitely scorching hot. She gave out a smile, and she showed no signs of being sick few days ago. As I prepare for the interview, I showed the questions that I have prepared for her. I want to give her ample time to clear her mind and organize her thoughts. As Marjorie was reading the material, I noticed that she seems happy with the questions that I have come up with and I could really feel the enthusiasm in her. After a few minutes I already conducted the interview with Marjorie, a certified PUP student.

Marjorie Cornillez is a college student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication. She has been in the institution for four years. The thing that separates her from the “usual" college student is the fact that she is not just a regular student — an irregular student to be exact. Marj was not left much of a choice when she first enrolled here in PUP. Her first choice was definitely to study in a Communication Course, but she was not able to reach the quota. That is why she decided to enroll in any available course then after a year go and shift to Broadcast Communication. She then continues to discuss the experience of an irregular student. “There are both pros and cons of being an irregular student. It's exciting in some ways that I am being exposed to different people with different personality and ideas. Having wide-range of friends made me confident in dealing with future people to be met. The difference only is that I have to deal with the big adjustment of different point of views and attitude.” It seems that she is already comfortable with that kind of set-up.

Then the interview went on to discuss her Alma Mater. The reason why she studied in PUP is the fact that she believes that it gives out quality education which is comparable with the private schools. Her first impression though shows that she does not really like the environment for it seems like it “was not a university itself.” When asked how that impression was changed, she pointed out that it is better if we make the most out of the university and leave out all the negative aspect of it. It clearly shows that she followed the saying “mind over matter”. She also thinks that the university gave her more than just quality education. For her, PUP has a fun environment, for she learns not just academically but in other aspects as well. It really shows that she prioritizes her studies rather than anything else. When asked about the rallies in PUP, she stated that “It maybe true but nevertheless you never make it a priority because the rule implies in PUP is education first and it is well-observed and followed”.

Marjorie is truly not your ordinary college student. Not everyone can claim that they became a contestant in a nationwide model search show! Two years ago Marjorie was blessed to be part of the first “Philippines Next Top Model”. When asked on what actions did the university did when they found out about it, she said that was glad to share that she was amazed by the support that the university has given her during her stint at the show. Even though it has already ended she still dreams of being a successful model — but the thing that really excites her more is a career in broadcasting. The way she said it was really assertive yet sincere. The way she thinks and answers is a good sign that she still has her feet on the ground.

Since this is already her fourth year in college, I asked her about the things that she looks forward to in her last few semesters in the university. She answered with enthusiasm and said that she looks forward in doing her thesis, for she knows that it will help her in the future when she will take up her Masteral Studies. Because of that Marjorie hopes that the professors will arm her with the right knowledge that she will further in her life. To wrap-up the interview, I asked her to justify herself as a true Iskolar ng Bayan, and here is what she said. “Being a good example of a PUPian. Having an acquired knowledge, learned abilities and fruitful activities will make my endeavors progressive is my description of being an Iskolar ng Bayan”. So in a few years time, when you see a certain Marjorie Cornillez walking the catwalks in New York or anchoring her own television program, keep in mind that that girl is a certified student of PUP. A PUPian who is thankful of what she had learned and proud of where she came from. Truly, we can all see a bright future ahead of her.

1. What is your course?

I am taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication.

2. What influenced you in choosing your course?

Ever since I was a child, I had always dreamt of becoming a newscaster or a broadcaster. I believed that I could hone my abilities and skills if I would enroll in a Communication course. During my 4th year in high school, we had our career orientation seminar, wherein the different deans of the colleges here in PUP had a talk with us. The one who did the talk for the College of Communication was former dean Dr. Maria Lourdes del Pilar-Garcia. I was really amazed when she did her talk. I could say that the seminar had influenced me to really pursue what I want since I was a kid.

3. What are the activities or organizations have you joined in your school?

In terms of the activities, I have participated in the major events of some of the organizations. Some of these are the scriptwriting seminar, dubbing seminar, etc. Recently, I have taken part of the college’s intramurals, wherein I was part of the tug-of-war.

When joining an organization is concerned, at first, I wanted to join the theater group of the college, but I lost my interest when I knew who the members were. I just feel like I would not jive along with them. I also wanted to go for the Broad Circle but I got lazy to go to their try outs. In short, I do not belong to any organizations in the college.

4. Who is your favorite professor? Why?

This is a tough question to answer. I would only mention a few. One of them would be Prof. Palad, since I really learned a lot from him. I also like Dr .Garcia because of the fact that she gives us lessons which can be found in books, but more importantly she shares with the class life-lessons which are really practical. I kinda like Prof. Bernate for he really challenges his students to do their best in his subjects.

5. Was there any adjustment/s when you entered college compared to high school? How did you cope up with it?

Since I spent my high school years inside the PUP campus (being a PUP-Laboratory High School graduate), I could say that there was no major adjustment for me. I did not have the thing that they refer to as “culture shock” since I was already accustomed to the lifestyle of the university. Of course the subjects were different, the schedules were quite different and our building is outside the main campus, but these were all carried out smoothly. In college I really learned how to depend on yourself, unlike in high school were everything was being spoon-fed to us.

6. Do you have any regrets studying here at PUP? Why?

There are things that I really do not like about our college, but you know time is wasted when you deal with things or decisions that you regret. I just learned that you really have to make the most of what you have, and honestly I did not really have that much of a choice since I only applied for a few universities. I would not deny the fact that somewhere down the line I have that feeling of regret, but at this stage in my life I could say that the regret is already gone.

7. What was the worst experience that you encounter as a PUP student?

Well, one of the things that I really do not like is the fact that there are days wherein not one professor has come to class. It really feels like a waste of time, money and effort. The rallies kind of annoy me because all they do is disturb classes. The usual difficulties or shortage in the facilities add up to the problem. And yes, the people, especially in our college, for I just do not feel their vibe that well.

8. What can you say about the overall system implemented here at PUP?

For the past six to seven years that I have been staying here in PUP, I could say that their really is nothing explosively good that is happening. Yes, there are programs and developments that are being implemented, but overall, I give it only a satisfactory remark.

9. Do you have any suggestion/s to make your school more progressive?

I will need to conduct a thorough research on that matter before I give any realistic suggestions. J

10. What can you say about the students of PUP?

There is definitely a variety of students here in the university. Some are really serious with their life, a lot are busy playing with their online games, some are just appearing only when there are exams. It is really interesting. The students need a lot of work to do to be able to justify that they really deserved to be called the “iskolar ng bayan.”

11. What can you say about the teaching methods of the professors?

Well, they have their course outline, which is good. The problem is some professors do not regularly attend their classes, which is not good especially when the subject that they teach is a major subject. Sometimes, reading only the modules doesn’t help. A discussion is needed to fully understand a subject.

12. What learning experiences would you like to share with your fellow students?

All I could say is that they should learn how to balance work and play. It is true that college is really a pivotal chapter in our lives, but we should not solely focus on that. Students should learn how to unwind once in a while, without compromising their responsibilities. If you study in COC, you should also try to bring packed lunch, since there aren’t a lot of food stores near the area. Plus, it will also help in saving your allowance. J

13. Have you tried joining rallies?

No. And I never plan to join one in the future.

Up Close and Personal with an “Iskolar”

Athena Michelle de Lara, is a fourth-year Broadcasting student from the College of Communication. She is already 21 years old from Talipapa, Novaliches, Quezon City but she is originally from San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija. Her mother is a music teacher in the name of Ma. Raquel de Lara and her father is Danilo de Lara, a self-employed businessman.

We held our small talk in a classroom near the CoC Theater. I remember those days when our section used to have a class there and having those silly talks during our free time. At first, we made each other comfortable before I started the interview.

Firstly asked, who influenced her to enroll in PUP. She said that no one actually convinced her to enroll here. She was the one who insisted to her parents that she wanted to study in PUP. And she was asked how she describes PUP as her school, she cheerfully said that her university is “astig.” This university taught her how to be resourceful and more patient in a lot of things. She told me that this school taught her more on the right virtues and beliefs more than academics. She said that PUP is a liberated institution her expectations were satisfied in her stay here in our university.

As the interview continues, she was also asked what particular subject in her course she really likes the most; she said that production subjects really captured her interest. When it comes to her most favorite professor, Sir John Gemperle a.k.a. Papa Jack is her bet. The reason why she likes him is because according to her, he is not bookish and he teaches his lessons based on experience.

Athena is planning to take a Master’s Degree in Management after she graduated and she has this dream of applying in a big company that will make use of her talents and skills. On the more personal side, she told me that college life is more difficult and more demanding compared to her high school life. But even though it is tedious, she feels more independent and resourceful this time. Her adjustments were a little bit harder because she has to stay awake even though it is already late just to finish her paper works. But she said before that production subjects really took her interest and during production activities was the most memorable moment for her. The last question was what particular views in her life that changed since she entered college. She said that things in life cannot be achieved easily and you have to strive hard in order to achieve your goals.Truly it was a wonderful experience going back to your Alma Mater. And it is also an enjoyable moment that I got to the chance to talk with a student currently studying here and be able to relate myself to those things that she is presently experiencing.. The up’s and down’s of being an “Iskolar.”

A True-Blooded PUPian

In this view, its students are expected to possess a mixture of exceptional wit and brilliance with the resourcefulness and hardwork that cannot be found to other students.

Just inside the College of Communication (COC) campus, a simple girl has what it takes to be a “real PUPian”. Maricar Dizon or ‘Macah’ as what her friends and classmates usually call her, is a 3rd year Broadcast Communication student. She just turned 18 last April 4. Macah is the second child of Arturo and Fe Dizon, next to Aristotle, and elder to Hector. The name ‘Maricar’ was given by her brother Aristotle before the latter died and this name serves as a beautiful yet indelible memory of Macah’s brother to her.

When asked about her hobbies, she immediately mentioned about reading books, which I can say is currently a rare hobby of the youth. She even added writing literary pieces, watching drama and action movies, and listening to slow rock music. Her interest is movies, just exactly the same with the most Broadcast Communication students in her environ.

Macah’s dream in life is to write a book in the near future – a unique vision only found among the students who are ready to share their experiences and influence other people. She wants the book to be an inspirational novel that will show reality of life in a positive way.

PUP was Macah’s chosen university for a common reason - its affordable and her score did not make it to the University of the Philippines. But this fate brought her to the infamous Pylon of Sta. Mesa, Manila.

The Broadcast Communication course is not her first choice. She was planning to take up Journalism. But she realized she wanted to try something new since she used to be a student journalist in her elementary school. It was a nice thing to hear from a simple girl who wanted to do something different from her usual field. She’s one of the brave students dared to explore herself and moved out of her comfort zone.

Macah views PUP as a “small Philippines”. She believes that the university is composed of thousands of students from different parts of the country, influencing one another with traditions, culture and religion. Due to the university’s popularity nationwide and its mission to alleviate the country from its immediate problems, PUP holds a great number of scholars aspiring to attain their own dreams for themselves and for the country. This proves her belief and she dares to influence and to be influenced.

Her most unforgettable experience in college is the COC’s General Assembly when she was in first year. She was too excited to meet her new schoolmates and her new college that she was expecting to be a lot different from her high school. She also added that she even attended a concert in the university because of her excitement to get to know her new university more.

She also considers that having organization is one of her achievements in college. Her organization brings her more closely to the COC, which she believes is a very competitive college, unlike any other student. She also treasures the experience she is acquiring while in the college that’s why she is expecting to experience more productions among her subjects. This, in her firm belief, would improve her craft which is broadcast production.
Macah is one of the thousands of inspiring students that the PUP has. On her point of view, the university has succeeded in transforming her into a great citizen who would reciprocate all her skills and patriotism to the nation in the near future.

College Life is Not as Boring as We Think

“Just practice time management and always keep in mind that your education is the most important thing.” That’s the message given by Ms. Darilyn Dogayo, a 3rd year broadcasting student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, College of Communication when I asked her to give tips for students who have busy college lives like her.
Busy college lives. Is it because of academics? Most students are afraid to study in college because of that reason. Another is that they think that they will just get bored with it. The question is. Is college life really boring?
This talented student proves it wrong by telling her story, her experiences and achievements from PUP. Coming from Bagong Ilog Pasig City, Darilyn or famously known as Dadah decided to study at PUP because of its quality education and low tuition fee. She was upset when she first stepped inside the campus and even said “Hala, Bakit ganito?” But now, being a part of it, she’s now sensitive and very much concerned with her school. She agreed that some people don’t know how to take care of the PUP surrounding and gave an idea on avoiding the posting of unnecessary things on the wall.
During the interview, her face can’t conceal the fact that she’s starting to love her school especially her college, the College of Communication. She laughed when she said that the reason why she chose her course is because she has the guts, the talent, the face, the knowledge, the attitude and of course the passion.
No wonder! She is now a member of an organization in COC which is the Teatro Komunikado. It organizes almost all of the significant College events and even University events like pageants, concerts and plays.
Also, she became one of the actresses of their plays and one of that is her portrayal as a mother of a bisexual which she considered her best role. According to her, she loves it when people see her in different characters.
How about her academics? Of course, she’s still a student and she considered herself an expert in time management. Being popular is not an excuse for having favorite subjects which she answered the production subjects and not-so-loved subjects like Algebra, Economics and Statistics. Hmm… just like an ordinary broadcasting student.
So now, are you interested knowing what will Dadah be after college? Well, she sees herself as a successful woman with her own advertising company and of course a media practitioner.
By looking at her eyes, I can see that she really likes to be that woman, the woman from her future but when you look deeply in her eyes, you will see that there’s a confusion lingering in her mind. Well, we really don’t know what will happen in our future. What will we be? What job we’ll be having? Don’t worry too much about it. Everything has its own place. Just enjoy our college life and don’t take it as deep burdens. Live with it! Have fun with it! Like Dadah, she just showed us that college life is not as boring as we think.

A third year student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication in Polytechnic University of the Philippines named Ma. Rosalina Semira Flores of BBrC 3-1D was interviewee to gather and to have informations about the profile of a “Iskolars ng Bayan”, a PUPian.

The first question given is “Why did she choose to be a student of PUP?” She said that when she was still on highschool , she was already determined and decided to be a PUPian, to enter the world of “Iskolars ng Bayan” , because of the quality education given & offered in the University, the one and only very cheap tuition fee and she thinks that there would alwaysbe more opportunity here in Manila since she was originally from the province of Batangas. The second question was “What made her choose Broadcast Communication as her course?” Ms. Flores says “My desire to be a part of television and radio industry or the media started since I was in my fifth grade in elementary. That’s why I am already decided to be a media practitioner since I was in highschool. At that time, I am already determined to fight for the truth, to serve the public and to inform them the informations they have to receive”.

The third question is that “Is she really enjoy taking Broadcast Communication as her course and Why?” She said that as the time goes by, she always learn how to love more and more the course she’s taking up and it makes her feel satisfied knowing that she made the best choice of what course to take, She also added “Basta, yung fulfillment, iba!” The fourth question I ask to Ms. Flores is that “Do you think, the University or even the College can give you the right knowledge and Practices concerning your course? Why? and How?” She answered quickly “Yes, but still there are some things missing. One of the primary needs in the study of Broadcasting is the “Speech Laboratory” because a good voice is the main tool of a broadcaster”.

The fifth question is “How do you see PUP as your school?’’ She answered a very short statement, she said “One of the outstanding Universities here in our country”.

I also add some questions about the current issues concerning Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The last question I gave to her is that “What is your stand regarding the “Gang Rape” issue in the University as well as the “Computer Shop” inside the library? “I don’t think that the Gang Rape happened inside the University is the fault of PUP, That’s the girl’s fault. She must know what kind of organization she’s entering. She must be aware of what “initiation really is” and about the computer shop inside the library, it is okay to have computer shop inside the University. I don’t see something wrong about it, but it must not have any gaming services, the facilitation must only allow the students to do school works only. Well I think President Guevarra has something to do with this, he allowed the computer shop to perform those kind of gaming services, he’s really profit-oriented”, Ms. Flores said with a sad tone.

A Deeper look on a Student’s life

Ms. Joy Alaine Gapaz, is a 3rd year Broadcasting student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, College of Communication. She is 19 years old and currently residing at Bagong Silang, Caloocan City. Originally, her family came from Mulanay, Quezon. She is the daughter of Nora and Jose Gapaz.

Her school’s atmosphere is very nice and the students there are active making the ambience very lively and enjoyable to stay in. She was interviewed in the campus’ gazebo where students hangout during their free time.

Alaine chose PUP as her University because she said that this institution caters and satisfies her capabilities. She also mentioned that this university offers quality education and the tuition fee here is very low. Taking up Broadcasting is her personal choice because she found it interesting and challenging. And being a Broadcast student, firstly asked was if how she can describe professionalism when it comes to work. She said that professionalism is a matter of respect and discipline in different aspects.

When it comes to adjustments from high school to college, Alaine found it hard because she is quite far from her school. She has to travel for about 2 hours before she arrives in her campus. She was also asked if how she can describe her professor when it comes to their teaching abilities. She said that her professors are intelligent and they used to share their personal experiences when relating to students.

In the middle of the interview, she was asked if how she handled those persons who were difficult to get along with specially when accomplishing a certain school project. She said that she just did her part in order to finish those tasks. She also mentioned that a disagreement in a professional work is a natural thing. Sometimes we have to reject other’s idea for the betterment of the project, and it is fine with her. Alaine also bothered to ask if there was a time when she has to make an important decision regarding with her studies. She said that actually she has this plan to transfer to another university because of the distance and she might lose her scholarship. She thought that she cannot continue her study in PUP because of the fare increase but now she already adjusted and decided to continue studying here.

It was an enjoyable time talking with Alaine. It was a nice thing that she was able to share her thoughts and experiences of being a student this time. I hope that she can use those things that she learned when she already entered the real world where bigger challenges are present.

The Model Student

Charmagne Marie A. Gregana, a third year, Broadcast Communication student form Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila has shared us what’s life to be as a student in the university.

This 18-year-old student chose to study at Polytechnic University of the Philippines because of her sister’s success in its chosen field, Tourism. Charmagne said that the university had molded her sister into a successful person. Her parent’s both agreed to study at the said university since the school is known to be the best caterers of good media practitioners.

With a simple knowledge in Broadcasting, she chose this course for she always dreamed of seeing herself on national television. It was her first choice and she succeeds persisting into this kind of field. Now that she’s finally a student in the university, she can’t say that her life in PUP is a bed of roses. This is simply because she believes that every individuals encounter difficulties. However, being a PUPian is one of the best things that ever happened to her life, in which, admittedly, awakened her from almost everything she used to know and believed. At first, Charm thought of Broadcast Communication as a simple field who just deals with how an individual speak in front of people, how to acquire correct posture, and even how to be well familiar and articulate with the word usage. But then, she admits that she doesn’t have any idea that Broadcast Communication is more than just speaking rightfully. Like most students, she expected to learn more about broadcasting industry. Thus, she also looked forward to the activities whereas she believes will enhance her potentials in communication.

When she was asked of the advantages of being a PUPian, Charmagne proudly says that the number one advantage is that the tuition fee is way lower than in any other universities who also offer the same course. And when we say Broadcasting, she believes that PUP is known for enhancing potential media practitioners. I believe this girl is proud that PUPians are resourceful. Why? It is proudly because the students tend to come up with own-made creative equipment and facilities. Being able to come up with a music video and stage productions tops the list of her memorable experiences at the university. As well as the very first time that their class joined a walk-out so they can attend a rally. At her age, Charmagne believed that students like her should present a good image to others to be able to contribute to the university’s totality. It is because that would reflect to how the university molds their students. She also adds that students must study hard to contribute more in the university’s academic excellence. Speaking of being a good media practitioner, she shares that as part of the media industry, one should take pains in enhancing and developing her expertise. A media practitioner should be able to adapt to different environment and be a keen observer of things happening around her. She even explains that one must be well aware of ethical manners and issues. And as an additional, she believes that patience and persistency are one of the ingredients to be a good media practitioner.
Five years from now, Charmagne would see herself working in the media industry, doing her best to develop her expertise in the field she chose to be. She also sees herself working and learning from the well-renowned and respected broadcast journalist of her time. Optimistically speaking, this girl sees herself slowly but surely going to the summit of her dreams having the greatest lessons from the university, which is, about being good and persistent; being good without needing to walk over other people’s desires and happiness. And persistence, that would not serve its deal if one should only, think of herself. For Charmagne, “If you want to be good, do good.”

Certain as a she is

Leighnor Ann M. Gumogda, 18 years old and living in Batasan Hills, Quezon City has no concrete plan of studying in PUP. She was a student of Batasan Hills National High School when her classmates persuaded her to come with them and fill-up the requirements for PUPCET.

“Actually I’m just swept. When I’m in high school, I never thought that I’ll be studying at PUP. It really never even crossed my mind. My classmates told me to file an application for the PUPCET and I went with them since I’m already late for UPCAT,” she said when asked how was she able to know about PUP. And luckily the lady who was just swept away passed the exam and not only had that she passed but got a high score as well. Before and after the examination she did not consider enrolling to other universities. “PUP lang ang pinag-enrollan ko my mother’s choice- low tuition fee.” Everybody has the same reason why they enter PUP and Leighnor’s mom was practical enough. With 500-peso tuition fee they really made a wise decision, mothers really know best.

Ever since high school, she went to a lot of seminars and attended a lot of press cons that’s why she took Bachelor in Broadcast Communication “It’s the influence.” When it comes to subjects, as for her there’s no hard subject everything can be learned in the process. But the problem she sees aside from financial aspect is the professor. “Minor subject profs ang problema ng karamihan, specially me. Sila yung nagpapahirap, too many requirements that are not needed. Tsaka most of them, di proficient.” How about the COC professors? “Magagaling ang mga COC profs.”

Leighnor is not active with extra-curricular activities but she maintains her good grades and she enjoys being a COC student. Her favorite events in COC are the Sikat Awards where productions are given recognition; Cheering Competition “kase lagi tayong panalo, sikat na naman” and COC Foundation Week. Although she is busy fulfilling her responsibility as a student and as a member of her family, she finds time to compose songs, play guitar, read books and surf the net. But her study habit? “Nothing specific.”

PUP had faced controversies in the past few months, the gang rape, the computer shop in NALRC and recently the five-month old fetus found in one of the comfort rooms at the Jasmine Building. As a PUPian how is she going to defend the school when somebody puts it down? “’…yun ang dulot ng media, parang sponge ang tao. Most especially yung average or below average, di natin sila masisisi kung ganun yung mga reaksyon nila kasi yun ang nakikita nila at naririnig nila. D’yan pumapasok ‘yung tinatawag nating sophisticated communication, dapat daanin nating mga mas nakakaintindi sa paraang ‘di ikakalaki ng gulo.” And the best way to do that “prove them wrong”.

Every school has its good and bad side so what makes her proud to be a PUPian? “The answer is obvious, maraming magagandang bunga ang PUP, marami kang makikilalang magagaling na taong mula sa PUP.” For that she believes that her batch will be one among them.

Five to ten years from now she sees herself in a radio station she wants to be a disc jockey first before entering the television and movie industry, “that would be my preparation.”

Leighnor was influenced by her classmates to consider PUP, because of her mom, she finally decided to enter PUP, because of her wit and intelligence she managed to be a PUPian and she is paving her way to be one of the best in her batch and to be one of the best in her future field.

Regular day for an irregular

It’s really hard to cope up with new environment. You will mingle with different people who rose from different culture and you will abide with their interest for them to like you. And the best examples of people who are experiencing this are the irregular students. They mingle with different student everyday. They become resilient so that they can go with the flow.

PUP students are known in the country as intelligent active ye humble and resourceful. Aside from low tuition fee, Polytechnic University of the Philippines offers high quality of education.

And Mary Shane J. Infantado is one of the lucky and best student who was given a chance to be part of the PUP circle of achievers. She’s an irregular student originally from the College of Accountancy. The primary reason why she decided to shift to broadcast communication is because the subjects in accountancy were very draining and tough since they have lots of exams to take and their professors are so harsh and perfectionist that is why it hard for them to study. “I don’t have any regrets in shifting. I’m having a great time in this college and I am so happy to be part of the certified outstanding college in the university”, Shane answered when she was asked if she have any regrets.

Though she’s an irregular student she’s still happy because she found new friends. But sometimes she’s having a hard time in coping up with the new environment because some people are making prejudgments towards her.

“At first, I expected that it would be fun and challenging because most of my friends who are ahead of me and took the same course (bachelor in broadcast communication) most likely worked on productions and field”, Shane said. Shane is an adventurous person, she loves to explore that is why she chose to shift to broadcast communication.

To be free and to express herself is what she wants. And she believes that one way of expressing ourselves is through writing.

Shane Infantado is a very participative student. Though some of her classmates misunderstood her, she remains standing and fighting because she believes in the cosmic rule of karma that what you do to others will be do unto you.

“How does it feel to be one?”

Polytechnic University of the Philippines, a school across the railway train. A school which is sometimes thought of as UP and a State University which offers the lowest tuition fee in the country. I was given an opportunity to interview one student from PUP. Josephine M. Kayas of BBrC 3-1D is from College of Communication taking up Broadcast Communication.

She chose to study in PUP because they cannot afford to pay a high-paying school unlike in PUP where tuition fee is low but still it provides good education. Proud to be called a PUPian and “Iskolar ng Bayan” because PUP can be leveled up to other prestigious schools in the country. She believes that PUP can help her to achieve her goals. One of those is to be a successful media practitioner in the near future and to have a well-lived life.

As a student, she is proud to say two traits that run through the blood of a PUPian, these are resourcefulness and creativity. She’s a Mass Communication student and it helps her to develop and enhance the talents that God has given her which eventually can bring her to life she’s been wanting.

I was able to ask her how her life goes in PUP. How does the environment of the school affect her everyday life. She said that everyday that she goes to school, she become more conscious of the harsh realities of life with achievements.

Doing this interview, I came to realize that even if the students here pay low tuition fee they are very talented and intelligent. You can see the eagerness to study hard for their future. No matter what it takes, they do their best for the betterment of their life.

Education is the key to success, that’s why students here have been trying hard even though they are financially challenged. There’s still a way for them to succeed and nothing can stop them if they really want to be an achiever.

Strive, Dare, Prove--- PUP

Strive to be equal, dare to be different. Popularly unique university for the poor. Controversial, outstanding, and creative, these are the words that best describe the Polytechnic University of the Philippines as perceived by other people. But how does it really feel like studying at PUP? Let’s take it from a certified “Iskolar ng Bayan” and delve deeper into her thoughts about her Alma Mater.
Born to parents who are both Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Lady Carmina Litonjua, 19 years of age, had the chance to study in private schools from kindergarten up to her high school years. According to her, she ended up studying at PUP because it was her parents’ decision. Since her mother was a former Finance Director and her father was a former Chairperson in Accountancy at PUP both wanted their child to be a CPA like them so they made her take up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
Apparently, she shifted courses and took up Bachelor in Broadcast Communications after a year for some reasons she didn’t share. Nevertheless, it did not hinder her from describing her life at PUP to be happy. It served as a way of opening her eyes to the reality of life and how to be more independent.
Bragging that the edge of being a PUPian is humility, Lady said that for her, the system of education at her school is good but in her opinion, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Well, it is clearly visible that there are a lot of things that the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is lacking. Most of these are facilities that could have helped in making the university more susceptible to learning.
This was one of the difficulties she had encountered as PUPian. Having studied at private schools before, she had a culture shock when she studied at PUP. Everything seemed different from what she was used to. From the environment, the people she’d dealing with everyday of her student years, up to the way these people live their lives, it was totally different.
Although she admitted that it was hard for her at first, she then accepted and tried to understand everything she witnessed with an open mind. All these contributed in helping her grow as a person. Knowing the realities of life made her realize how other students strive hard for their goals inspiring her to do more but still dare to be different in her own way.
Just recently, the university had faced numerous criticisms and sensitive issues concerning the security and moral stature on the whole studentry. When asked to make a comment on this, Lhady simply told that it’s the fault of one of the system’s problem. Different issues popping up about the Polytechnic University of the Philippines are quite alarming but even if it were so, she said that it could have been just a matter of proper crisis handling.
Undeniably, living the life as an “Iskolar ng Bayan” is never easy. Facing the usual college student antics pus the downfall of having insufficient facilities for better learning, studying at PUP is one great experience a student can be proud of. Being able to survive all of the struggles that any other schools don’t have and still ending up successful proves that college education isn’t all about high tuition fees. Most of the time, it’s about owning the guts, intelligence and abilities to prove your worth to the rest of the world. Like what my brother used to tell me, “It’s not in the school, it’s in the student.”

BEYOND PAUCITY LIES QUALITY

Polytechnic University of the Philippines based on surveys is one of the top 20 schools in the Philippines that offer a bunch of in-demand courses. Let us look beyond the buildings of PUP.
How are you going to enter the University? The very first step is to pass the PUPCET. Out of almost 50,000 students will take the PUPCET every February, but the reality is, only 10,000 will have the chance to enter the University. The University with six campuses, two branches and ten extension campuses serving more than 52,000 students, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is the largest university when it comes to student population. PUP is known for its low tuition fee. Perhaps, this is the only University who offers 12Php per unit in the Philippines. Abundant people want to enter the University primarily because of its very low tuition fee without bearing in mind if low tuition fee produces a quality education. Let us enter the reality that lies within low tuition fee and the quality education that it bestows.

Mylene Ruby B. Llander, a 19 year old 3rd year student taking up Broadcast Communication in PUP has passed the PUPCET exam and had the chance to continue her studies in PUP. She started to study in the University since high school. She has already a background of the University for she has experienced her 4 years there. Moreover, some of her relatives graduated in the same University that had a good career after graduated, and for that reason, she believes that PUP is a good University. As days get ahead of during her college years, some of her notions changed. Earlier, she believes that PUP is far greater than other state Universities because they produce quality education despite of its low tuition fee.

A University that produces a quality student accompanies with a quality education. In addition to that, a quality education goes with the knowledge from the professors. Mylene thought that like what she had in high school, most of her mentors are capable of giving quality education, but in college, some of her professors are incompetent of giving enough wisdom. We cannot rebuff the fact that this University has a bunch of brilliant professors, but for some reasons like being absent not only once, being late more than half the proposed time of the class, and merely giving the students an awful impression about their way of teaching that give reasons for students not come in their class anymore may contradict its excellence. Is it because they don’t have enough salary, or it’s their effective way of teaching? A professor plays a big role in a student’s growth, but if they are ineffectual ones, how can they give students a quality education? If most number of professors in PUP is feeble, how can they produce quality students?

Another factor that affects the students in a University is its environment. PUP is one of the biggest Universities in the Philippines. As of this moment, you can see a clean pleasing front view of the University, but what about the looks inside? It has a standard classroom for a maximum number of 40 students, but because of the enormous population of the University, 50 students or more are packed into a not so large room. Furthermore, an air-conditioned classroom and even an air-conditioned library have never that near in the PUP, not even close. It’s because it is purely public that has enough tuition fee for the needed facilities only. But why is that even electric fans are not enough? What about the heat of the weather? A one is to one ratio in a computer subject has never been that good for PUPians. Worse even, no computers at all. If the class has a computer subject, most of the time, they will have a lecture and a very little time for the hands-on. Some classes have one computer per student, but you have to pay for it. Another problem is the horrible smell of the comfort rooms that impinge on the classes. How can the students concentrate if their attention is being paved away by the nasty smell of the comfort rooms? It may tend the students not to absorb the lectures and not to listen anymore.

PUP is as well known for a huge number of activists who bravely faces rallies in any way. Mylene believed that somehow, all the rallies that create booming noise distract the classes and somehow deter PUP to have at least progress. Almost all of the proposed rules and projects of the administration are being impure by the activists. But she also said that having a quality education can’t be defined by the roars made by these people. It is still depends upon the choice of the students if they will allow these noise to divert their studies.

Mylene once said that a quality education may be defined by the Universities’ deficiencies, but a being a quality student of a University is still a matter of choice. If it’s your will to be affected by the noise and dearth that surrounds you, what are you going to expect then? Your future still lies upon your hands.

“A University that produces quality students is proved in having quality education despite of all its deficiencies, and therefore should be called a total university.”

A girl from Tagaytay Street of Caloocan city chose to study in Polytechnic University of the Philippines because she does not want her parents to suffer just to be able to send her to an expensive private school. But it doesn’t mean that the quality of education is less. “I know that PUP is known for having good standards when it comes to teaching their students.” That’s what she said justifying that quality does not have to suffer for paying less.

She first took up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy for that was what her parents wanted for her, a certified public accountant. But she didn’t really like it. Deep down in her heart she likes something else. It sure is hard to do something you don’t like. And so she talked to her parents and shifted to Bachelor in Broadcast Communication.

After 3 years, she’s still in PUP-College of Communication and she says shifting made her happy. Although being an irregular student has it advantages and disadvantages, she still rather study in her personal chosen field. And according to her “..coping in to the new world takes time”. Nonetheless, she said that her adventure started more likely when she shifted. She even compared how the students of COA are always reading books and preparing for exams and she described the students of COC – outgoing.

Sounds like she’s having fun meeting new people. But she still admits that being an irregular student is tough. She mentioned about delayed graduation. She won’t be able to graduate on time because her curriculum before was totally different from what she’s taking up now. She’s still trying to catch up with the new curriculum and that’s the same reason she gave for not joining any school organizations.

In spite of not being a part of organizations in school, she still has friends to hang out with. Actually, that’s what she does after all her classes. She goes to the mall or somewhere else to unwind after a stressful day in school. And sometimes, she even finds comfort just by having long talks about life with her friends.

A student, a friend and on top of it, she’s an exceptional daughter. Her greatest dream is to finish college and be able to help out her parents and give whatever it is that her family needs. She wants to give back all her parents effort into bringing her up to what she is now.

A grateful dreamer, that’s how I would describe her. And when I asked for a message for the aspiring PUPians, this is what she said. “I would like to encourage them to persevere and continue to live their dreams.” Very Inspiring, especially having heard it from a part of the institution. “Just continue to dream and make it happen!” were some of her last words.

She obviously likes where she is now but she still thinks that there’s always room for improvement. When asked to rate PUP on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being the highest, she gave it a 7. She believes that PUP is a great institution that’s why she chose it but it can still use some improvements too.

Finally, she says that this experience is a blessing…and an obstacle to test her strength and faith.

Deterioration of the quality of education in the country has long been the matter every time a school year begins. Good thing that many students in PUP are still excelling in numerous fields. This may be proven by Cherry Lou Nequia, a broadcasting communication student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines who passed the 2006 PUPCET with a raw score of 100+.

She filed an application for entrance examination at Polytechnic University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas when she was about to enter college, and luckily, she passed both entrance examinations but did not consider the latter because of high tuition fee. Like Cherry Lou, low tuition fee but a quality education is the most common reason of all students who wanted to enter and have already entered PUP. Every student who wanted to be part of this institution, have to experience the Pila Ulit Pila system every enrollment. Not to mention the antique facilities and equipment that the university has, and Cherry has been experiencing these for three years. Aside from not- so- ideal facilities, she was dragged into dire issues about the shortcomings of the management that are being flaunted these days. According to her, it’s annoying because whether the students like it or not, they are also being drawn on the issues about the school but it would be so shallow to be subjective in all aspects, and get so affected, that is why she just currently enjoys herself at College of Communication where she experience different bliss and opportunities of the course every time they got to do productions and being paid off and appreciated.

There comes the PUP gang rape, the computer shop inside the university issue, and the old problem about the not reasonable beautification projects, still, PUP created many renowned people in different fields especially in television and movie industry, that’s what makes Cherry proud as she takes pleasure in being a broadcast communication student and be inspired of getting into the level which she can fulfill her goal to be a director.

Amidst of all the intrigues, Cherry Lou remains proud as a PUPian as she proves that good education cannot only be encompassed by conducive classrooms, quality books and beautiful facilities and equipment, but a better look towards a quality education in a stumpy cost.

What the Polytechnic University of the Philippines really stands for is the quality education as they prove the “Pataasan ng Utak Pababaan ng tuition” aphorism even with Pila Ulit Pila System.

Exploring the PUPian Perspectives

The laughter of the students, the footsteps of the people along the corridor, the rush that students feel whenever they come late to their classes, the active discussions of the professors and students in their respective rooms, the bubbly smiles of the peers while talking in the theatre, lobby, in vacant classrooms and everywhere inside the campus: these are the typical activities in the life of a student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Inspite of hardships in academics, students who are labeled as “Iskolar ng Bayan” have their own small ways to escape the pressure and have the ultimate desire-to be happy and have fun! Let’s see the evident manifesto of a true college life by one of the students in PUP, Ms. Tessa Joy Noche from the Bachelor in Broadcasting Communication, a simple but active collegian form the communication body.

A Batangueña, Tessa is an 18 year old lady, now living at SMI Village, Sucat, Muntinlupa City and currently on her 3rd year level in her course. She chooses Bachelor in Broadcast Communication because she knew that it is the most flexible course. Flexible, in a sense that she can easily find a job because she believes that communication exists everywhere and anywhere. She also knew that the course has a broad scope and she has a grasp on it since she loves writing.

She finds college life exciting and yet boring. Exciting because has lots of friends who are always supporting her in everything she does. She said that it is also boring somehow because she found some professors and subjects boring. It happens whenever the techniques was too traditional, which cause her to feel bored, not responsive and in the worst case… sleeping! She categorized the professors, that are some are nice and cool, some are so sensitive, some are approachable, some are terror and the good thing above all, there are still professors who are considerate to their students. Assessing her learning process, she gave a great smile and said “Its fine. It’s still working and processing.”

When she’s out of the classroom, she has a wide range of interest and activities to break the ice and kill the boredom; she’s holding a badminton racket saying “Obviously, I love playing badminton. In fact, I join the COC Clash of Athletes a week ago.” She also loves solving Sudoku, the number version of the crossword puzzle. And she also loves reading Cosmo pocket books.

When it comes to her love life, I was eager to know the story in that aspect of her life. Surprisingly, she just gives a big laugh saying, “Zero . . . I don’t have any relationship now since I’m focused on my studies now. I believe that there is a perfect time for everything.” With this, I was also laughing that time since I can relate to what she said.

As the discussion heats up, she also made mention about her future plans, she said that she sees herself as a successful person, maybe a writer or a media practitioner. But she is also open-minded on certain things, so she insists to open doors for new opportunities even on other fields such as business or sports.

In the final touch, she said her last testimony with conviction, “It’s really hard to enter in this university, so you must do everything and do your best to finish your studies. Money is not an issue; just enjoy what you have right now. Live your life to the fullest!” This statement maybe simple but very crucial to students not only in our university but also in other schools. I wonder how this simple, sporty and humble girl in the classroom has these thoughts in mind. It just reminds me that everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, you’re in the trend or not, or you don’t have looks that others have, has the power to reach their dreams and aspirations in life. The important thing is our passion and our drive to reach those dreams. We should be optimistic and reach for our dreams. Like Tessa, let’s be good examples, we Pupians, in building a just, simple, peaceful and strong country.

Jamie as a PUP Student

Marjamie Narte Pabalinas, Jamie to her family and friends is an 18-year-old Broadcast Communication student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The third year Broad Comm. student lives in Makati with her mother and two older siblings.

When asked why she chose PUP for her college education, Jamie said it is where her two other siblings graduated and there is nothing wrong if she follows their footsteps.

Though there are many universities scattered within the Metro, it is only in PUP where Jamie took a college a entrance exam and she did not hesitate to be part of the PUP community the moment she found out that she passed the exam. Nevertheless, because the university does not offer any medical course, Jamie decided to take up communication where she believes her skills will improve more.

So far, sleepless nights and tiring days of production are what she considers as her best experiences as a college student. Yes, she might be tired most of the time, get eye bags and sweat a lot, but these do not stop Jamie from loving these experiences because according to her, it is not just a production- here, you develop your skills and you will know how to enjoy and love what you are doing at the same time. However, production is not just about fun and skills. The bad side is the possibility of your friendship getting ruined because of your individual differences and it worsens because of the pressure you feel during the production. (So production can really make or break a class huh..)

Jamie sees herself as a madiskarte person and for her it is an edge over other college students from other universities especially those who are from elite schools. “Here in PUP, we were taught to get out of our boxes, of our comfort zones,” she added. She learned to be more practical and go with the flow if needed.

“It is a community, the students, who set PUP apart from other educational institutions,” stated the proud PUPian. Students have the freedom to express their opinions, criticism and people cannot dictate to us what to do and not, what to believe in and not. Students will learn how to think critical and analyze things.

When asked is she will send her future children in PUP for their education, Jamie said it is just okay. “I’m sure PUP has better facilities by that time.” Besides, the professors are the main reason why PUP has a quality education despite the lack of facilities.

For sure, Jamie will love to share her experiences as a PUP student to her future children (it is the ups and downs of real college life.)

RJ Payos: The Silent Stinger

“I was in Broadcom by accident” confessed the 18 year-old Broadcast Communication Junior Ronald James Payos.

That was a revelation which may explain why RJ; as he is more known, seem to appeal weird to his classmates on their starting years because of his quietness and aloofness to the crowd. Indebted to his tita’s abrupt idea of making him fall into the line for BBrC because it’s shorter, this could-have-been journalist in the making already learned how to embrace his course because of the superb training he acquired in his learning process.

Having been trained in a private secondary institution, RJ made a huge tapestry to embroider his spoon-fed, hassle-free high school routine to his “crazy” college life in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Like a prince on his voyage outside his kingdom, RJ has to learn to be independent somehow. When in high school he just walk blocks going to school and meet his very few schoolmates and be served with lessons freshly picked by his mentors, in college he travels one and a half hour minimum on his way to school everyday just to find out afterwards that his professors won’t come. RJ eventually got used to that system as he got used to the poorly-equipped facilities of the classrooms.

Despite the structural and technological limitations of his university, RJ describes PUP as a physically efficient and conducive to learning environment. In fact, he doesn’t want to change anything about his school. He was no complains whatsoever with the faculty and staffs of PUP, specifically in College of Communication. “The professors are like Hollywood superstars, we have to please them” believe it or not, he takes it on the light and believes that dealing with professors is a part of his task as a student. And as to the students, he finds them friendly and accommodating.

For three years, PUP made a big change on RJ. It honed him a better individual by giving him the best professors and implementing strict regulations. The environment also became his avenue for exploring more about his abilities. A lot were amazed when they found out his basketball prowess and hidden acting skill last year. He himself couldn’t believe he showcased such talents in front of a crowd. Bye-bye to the old introvert Ronald.

For someone who experienced both private and public school worlds, RJ still hold to a “security blanket”- the values of education he was thought regardless of the tuition fee he pays for it. He is looking forward to learn more and continue to get satisfying grades. He also has plans of befriending more people around so watch out girls and girls-wannabe.

Half his college struggle was won. The other half is on set. His said to be dream of finishing college without stopping is not too far from his stand point right now. And undoubtedly, his three remaining semesters in college will continue to wow his fellow COCians.

A Student in a Modern Era

In this modern era, everywhere you look things seem to change so fast that sometimes it seems like if you bump your head accidentally and you fell into a deep sleep you'll have a difficult time to catch up because everyday something differs from what it used to be. Just like being a student. My mom or generally speaking our parents loves to tell tales on how they used to be a student. How cheap the food and transportation were during their time and so on. It just makes me smile and wonder, is there really a big difference between the student now and the student before? How does it feel to be a student in this time?

Luckily, I was able to answer these troubling questions in mind when I met this round faced, be-dimpled and friendly student named Federico Y. Quiban Jr. a 3rd yr. student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and currently taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication. When I first learned about the course he was taking I was bit shocked because I thought everyone nowadays took up nursing and so I asked him, why did he take up this course. I didn't notice but a smile formed in my lips as he proudly says "I did a random sampling and I just tried my luck" of course I was a bit puzzled by his answer and maybe it shows my face for the hastily added; " I was not able to go to UST, I was devastated and so I just tried my luck". I didn't ask for further explanation for I fully understand how he felt, I for one experienced the disappointment of not being able to pursue a dream of studying in a university I admire and perhaps the students before us had undergone the same experience. I smiled emphatically towards him and say; perhaps it's your destiny. He replied briefly "maybe.”

In this point in time, my curiosity rises and I asked him he is enjoying his staying in PUP. He looked at me and with twinkling eyes he answered me directly; "Definitely for PUP allows me to be liberated --- in thoughts, words and action. It makes me feel free. “I knew he wasn't lying for I can see it his eyes but something tells me that he yearns for something more and so without thinking I asked him further as if we're two long-lost friends catching up with each other; so what keeps you busy these days, are you part of any organization? "I am advocate of PETA ---- an organization which takes care of animal welfare". How did you become part of PETA? "It started when my professor in Development Communication asked us to feature an NGO and our group chose PETA. I wasn’t really disturbed just by watching their IEC materials and I knew in myself that I have to be a part of this group". Are you a pet lover? "Yes." Aside from having pets what else do you like to do? " I enjoy playing play station and I love to dance. I consider dancing as a sport." How do you picture yourself after 5 years? "I think I'm having a very boring desk job with a very small salary." Isn't that pessimism? “No, it's reality because 5 years is a very short period of time." How about after 10 years? I want to be a producer. I think I will be regarded as cultural enthusiast producer of highly awkward production. "Is that your own established production outlet? "Yes." Do you have any one in mind to be your partner? "Yes, Mr. Bruce Espinas, a member of Banda Kawayan." Why did you choose him? "We share the same ideas in life."

Suddenly a friend of him calls his attention, as they were talking I remember one important question and so after his conversation with his friend I hurriedly asked him, what can you say to those people who are belittling your course? I will tell them that the noblest spirit begins with the smallest man. Even though they think little about our course let them be… let our works speak for itself.” His final answer will forever linger on my mind for he uttered it with confidence and sincerity.

My conversation with my be-dimpled friend leads me to a conclusion that being a student during this time is the same on being a student before. For each have the same spirit, dream and aspirations. Each yearns to fulfill his greatest ambitions and each visualizes themselves as someone successful in their chosen career.

I just hope that the fire and spirit I saw on Federico’s eyes will forever burn so that he will be able to make his dreams into a reality.

One College Life

Being a college student is a sure hard one. You need to submit the needed requirements on time, review for the midterms and finals, accomplish different tasks given by the professors and many other toxic activities. But on the state of our country today, a degree is needed for you to have a job. Having a college diploma is an advantage. It can be your passport to success.

Last week, I had the chance to interview a broadcast communication student, Ma, Anaflor Residuo of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Anaflor to her friends, she is currently a junior student of the course. According to her, she is the typical type of student. The simple one, the one who attends the class, complies with the requirements and wants to graduate. When asked what her goals in life are, Anaflor happily answered that ever since she was a child, she wants to be a newscaster. Aside from that, she wants to have a great job, help her family and become a successful woman.

The biggest challenge she had overcome as a student is when she shifted from accountancy to mass communication. Accountancy was her mom’s choice for her, so she took it up. But when she was already there, she was not happy, that was the time she realized that when you don’t like what you’re doing, you will never be happy even though you’ll have a good future on it. Anaflor almost lost her hope because of the long process of shifting but God still granted her wish and she is very happy for that. When she was finally in her new surrounding, she feels that she really belonged to it.

Being a PUPian is her contribution to her university. Even though P.U.P doesn’t have good facilities unlike other private schools, Anaflor is certain that being a P.U.P graduate, she’ll have a good future. Anaflor said that the youth should value what they have now- be it a little less or even if they have more. You’ll never know what you will have in the future. Value every learning you acquire wherever you go. It’s not only in school that you learn, go another mile. Each of us can make a difference.

Like Anaflor, the youth should not lose their hope. They must pursue their dream and sometimes need to sacrifice some things. Have the strength to face the problems that will come to you; this will make you a better person. Education is important and this will make a big difference in your life.

“The quality of the school depends on the quality graduates they produce.”- stated Anna Mikhaella D. San Andres when I asked her what is the edge of PUP among other universities. Mikha as fondly called by her classmates, 18 years old and a proud PUPian. She is a Broadcast Communication student of the College of Communication. Enjoying her chosen college in PUP makes life easier for her because it guarantees quality education and makes it student really knowledgeable outside or inside their chosen path. She was asked to compare her school to other and said that compared to other rich and prominent schools, she would choose PUP without second thoughts because the students there is manageable in a way that aside from being busy in their academic works still managed to have time to fight for what is right. She also stated that she enjoys field works like seminars, which can give her bonus knowledge that could help her stand long, and college weeks that could give her extracurricular activities that enhances her rapport and leadership skills. That’s why when she was asked if she could have chance to meet the president of PUP what would she tell him she that we must join the UAAP! Then she laughs. The students are the reflection of how good the school is whether on or off the campus the students are regarded as the extension of the school. For Mikha a student is expected to be a model of the highest norms of behavior befitting a true scholar, a future, and responsible citizen.

What have you heard of Pup before you enrolled here?
I heard that the university offers a good quality education especially in the fields of Accountancy and Broadcast Communication.

How is your stay in the university so far?
So far, so good. It is my third year in the university and officially my second year here in College of Communication. Shifting to Broadcast Communication has been a great move for me. I am enjoying the life of being a COCian and discover a lot of new things in me.

How has your perception of the university changed when it comes to academic quality?
It’s all good. Talking about the college I belong to, I believe that the subjects in the curriculum would help the students to enhance and excel in the field they chose. I admire the production subjects offered in the college which I definitely agree that, it is a great help to the students.

Why did you choose Broadcast Communication?
I chose Broadcast Communication because I want to explore the media industry. Aside from the fact that I want to be part of the radio industry, I believe that the Media Industry is an exciting field. Besides, being a Broadcast Journalist means serving our countrymen to the deepest of our ability.

What can you say about the university’s capacity in developing and enhancing your potentials in broadcasting?
I wouldn’t love this university until I shifted course. I saw the university’s capability of making globally competitive students when I entered the world of Broadcast Communication. I saw that the university, aside from the political crisis that it has been experiencing, I discovered that it is still holding its commitment to produce a good quality graduates most especially in the field of Broadcasting. Like I said, I was able to know new things about me, I got the chance to try and discover the wonderful yet intriguing world of broadcasting, and I am still looking forward to encounter new things in this field.

What study habits have you developed when you enrolled in this course?
I grew up with a good study habits my mom has taught me. Since most of the COCians that I encountered are more comfortable “cramming”, I never did allow myself to experience it. Thus, I want a task to be done, days before it has to be passed. Although sometimes, I admit that I got to experience cramming. I am not a perfect student. But when I will see to it that I can still be able to catch up whenever I am in this situation.

What experiences in the college do you treasure most?
There are lots of experiences that I will surely treasure most. But to mention a few, first, being part of Campus Aircheck of Campus 99.5 (not until its sudden reformat) is a great experience for me. I felt some sense of belongingness in my course when I passed the audition. Second, the production subjects that I had. I enjoyed each and every activity that we had. Lastly, the writing stuffs that our Professors gave us. (I would want to be a writer, so it has always been an exciting one for me.)

How do you see yourself working in the media industry five years from now?
I would see myself going to different places, making documentaries of any types of people; I would see myself writing news for radio, and even being the DJ of a radio station. If I can still cope up with the society, I would want to write feature articles for a magazine here in the Philippines. =)

What’s the greatest lesson in life that you’ve learned in the college that could be of great help to you in your chosen career?
One of the best lessons I have learned is that, we have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. And we have to face each and every trial given to us ‘cause it will make us strong. Be yourself. No one in the world is exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically me. So there’s no need to pretend and be another person. Because we are unique individuals in our own way. =)

Know how it feels to be the nephew of the highest ranking official in your college department, the dean, I decided to set an interview with the nephew of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines- College of Communication dean, Dean Robert Soriano.
Heintji S. Soriano, a student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is currently on his third year, taking up Broadcast Communication at the College of Communication.
Having this connection, he finds it both beneficial and sometimes quite pissing.
“Well, it’s kind of awkward for me to say ‘it’s great’ because my moves here are always limited. There are many eyes that keep staring at anything that I do, but in terms of enrollment and office access, I have more privilege than others.” he explained.
Being the nephew of the dean, a lot of professors expect high from Heintji, starting from his grades to his talents. He ‘s always observed because whatever he’ll do will affect not just his name but also his uncle’s.
“It helps me in a way that I have more privilege and because of that, it’s easier for me to mingle with the secretaries and professors which makes life easier in COC.”
This down to earth guy is an irregular student in COC, originally taking up Bachelor in Elementary Education in Our Lady of Lourdes; he transferred to PUP because he feels that is where he really belongs.
Through not affiliated with any organization in COC, he is still known inside and outside the classroom. This second of the three siblings of Mr. Benjie and Mrs. Carol Soriano is known for being friendly and approachable. And having a passion for singing, he won the second place on the recently held COC Idol at the PUP Main Campus.
“PUP-COC is a lot better and different as well as my previous school because it is many opportunities and it is a great college, university.”
As friendly as this guy is, Heintji has friends inside and outside the College, and this is one of the many reasons why he stays in COC. The camaraderie and the closeness he has made, makes him enjoy more his life in COC.

“Simply Knowing Imma…”

“For she’s a jolly good fellow (3x), which nobody can’t deny!” This is the very song that totally fits the girl whom I got to meet a few days back. Her name is Imma Kate Montes Sta. Ines, an 18-year old student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) who lives at Nueva Ecija but currently boarding at Sta. Mesa Manila. This positive person will surely rock you out with a sweet smile the moment you met her gaze. She may look typically plain physically as a student but she’s more than the typical student who wants to learn and at the same time enjoy her collegiate years.

‘Imma’ as her friends and classmates fondly called her decided to take up Broadcast Communication as her course. She’s a woman who would rather be caught in the middle of a war and get dirty with a hundred stories to tell than to be an office girl stuck doing paper works. The term “maarte” never suited her and that is why it triggered my curiosity to ask her something about the persons behind of what she is right now ----her family. Imma is the eldest daughter of Mr. Noli and Cherryla Sta. Ines. Her father is a rides operator at Star City and her mother is an overseas contract worker who is happily married with each other despite the sacrifice they had to meet to supply their family needs. Imma also has two sisters whom she really was close to and whenever she goes back to Nueva Ecija she makes it her point to buy them “pasalubong.” Coming from a well-oriented family, Imma was able to establish her independency by studying here in Manila.

Aside from her family, the teachers also greatly influence a student and Imma was no exception to that. I Even ask her the desirable qualities that she wanted to see in a professor. She said, “I love a teacher who knows the right time to teach and to joke around, a person who really knows the subject matter he is teaching even without relying on his material and other notes. A friendly mentor sure is good who lectures the topic with depth and knows how to keep the class interested without forcing them to listen to him.”

When it comes to her studies, she never was this so-called “geek” or a super grade conscious type of pupil. She just enjoys whatever new and useful knowledge she acquires from school because she doesn’t want to be driven off by pressure just to learn something new. Learning for her is a natural process that does not need constrained memorization for you to know the subject, what you have to do is to simply get the main point and understand it.

With this perception of Imma we could accentuate that the entrance of knowledge in the form of learning will be retained in the minds of the students naturally if you also have teachers (the source of information) who instructs in a natural and uncomplicated way.

Even without any organization joined in COC, Imma was definitely enjoying her college life as she learned things not only academically but the realities in the human world pertaining to life’s lessons, cultures and many more. This point of her life made her mature physically, mentally and emotionally. The unchained independence she has right now while away home is something she uses to explore things positively while making her way to the top of her goal. And what could be a better name for our goal but to call it dreams. Imma wants to establish a name in the broadcasting industry someday. As for her family, she have always longed for their happiness. She’ll make sure to always be available for them and wishes that there will come a time when her parents will not be separated anymore with each other just to provide for their needs. Imma said dreamily, “They (her parents one day) would just sit in a lovely tree house in the garden of a big and marvelous but very warm place, cuddling each other for almost every day for the rest of their lives.” This phrase really touched my heart and bear out Imma’s love for her parents: these are caring words coming from a very sweet girl.

She made me realize how life can be dealt with simplicity the way I saw her live her own. We are the one who’s making it complicated well in fact life was made simple by God from the start. This is Imma Kate Sta. Ines: a student who “Laugh at life’s simplest jokes,” a student who takes life simply beyond the absence of unnecessary complications, a student who seemingly longs for a simple dream to come true, a student whom you could simply be friends with, and most importantly, a simple student who’s jolliness and goodness deepened her being as a person ready to face the real world.

This saying does not only goes for the reflection of a person’s identity or personality, but also, it goes with the reflection of an alma matter and its student and vice versa.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) is known in the country for its low tuition fee. In fact, ot has the lowest tuition fee among universities in the Philippines, where a student only needs to pay 12 pesos per unit. But aside from that, are there other reasons why students choose this school to study?

Here’s an interview with Lovely Laine S. Tayag, a 19-year old irregular student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication in the said school.

Formerly, Lovely was a New Era student taking up Mass Communication. “I transferred to PUP to specialize in broadcasting since there’s no such major courses offered in my previous school ,”she answered when asked why she transferred.

“Aside from low tuition fee, I chose PUP ‘cause I can hardly believe that the quality education it offers is just the same with the standards of UP,” she said to answer the follow-up question why choose PUP to transfer.

She was also asked if she’s happ6y studying in the said school. She replied, “I can say that I am happy studying in PUP ‘cause the experience and people here taught me a lot that I’ll not be able to learn when I’m just in my former school.”

If given a chance to study in another school will you grab it?

“I’ll not go for it. Honestly, I’m also dreaming of studying in exclusive schools, not only in the Philippines, but also in other countries. But as of now, nothing can replace PUP in my heart.”

“The school represents the students and the students represent the school.”

Polytechnic University of the Philippines, located at Sta. Mesa, Manila is popular for having the lowest tuition fee among the universities and colleges in the Philippines. And one of its most prestigious colleges is the College of Communication, the very first communication school to pass the Level 3 Accreditation in AACCUP history. Accompanied by the college’s achievements are the increasing enrollees yearly, a sign that many students develop a desire of being a media practitioner and a communication disciple someday. But the question is, what really provokes the students to choose a communication career?
To have an idea about profiles of the COC students, I did an interview with Maria Cecilia S. Tena. She is 18 years old and is a third year student taking up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. According to Ms. Tena, her choice of taking up Mass Communication was influenced by her father. When she was young, her father used to watch news while she wanted cartoons. They usually had an argument about where channel should the television be tuned. Because of that everyday exposure to news programs, her father started to give her a background about the works of reporters, their salaries, the incentives they gain and how her father really admire them with all his heart. From then on, Ms. Tena developed the desire of being a reporter someday and being the one to watch by her father on television. As time passed by, her knowledge about media became broader which really boost her urge of being part of it up to the point she graduated from high school and started her journey within the jungle of PUP College of Communication
For her almost three years of stay in COC, she already encountered and passed different kinds of subjects in their curriculum. The course curriculum contained production subjects such as: Audio Video Techniques, TV Production, Radio Production, Drama and Theater Arts, and Multimedia Productions and Editing which gave her the background of what is it like to work on media; and intellectual subjects such as: Writing for TV, Writing for Radio, and Online Journalism which practice her ability on writing scripts and news articles. But Ms. Tena preferred more production subjects than intellectual subjects because she found enjoyment and fulfillment when she came up with a good production results like music videos, romantic flicks and stage plays. When it comes to professors, Ms. Tena told me that COC has both the effective and non-effective professors. There are strict professors that give burden to students as well as very kind members of the faculty who really serve the students all the materials that will help them in their easier learning of the subject. Although this is the situation, Ms. Tena can tell that COC still excels in the business because there are many PUP-COC graduates who are now successful and working on media. On the other pole, the PUP-COC still needs improvement especially in terms of the facilities. Ms. Tena suggested that the college must provide enough electric fans and well-lighting within the COC to speed up the learning of the students. She also added that it’s nice to study if you are in a nice and well-ventilated institution.
After interviewing Ms. Tena, I came up to the conclusion that PUP-COC students are satisfied with the kind of education they get from the institution. Go COC---the certified outstanding college! Reach higher COCIANS!

I’ve read lots of profiles of students from prestigious universities being featured in magazines and other posh reading materials. Even though most of the people don’t really know them, many of them still spend their spare time reading their Q & A articles. I once wondered why. Then I came up with such answers. Maybe, they want to get some information about the campus cuties. Or to have ideas regarding the latest trends in & out of the universities. Or maybe, they just don’t have anything to do.
But why there were only few write-ups about the PUP studs? To be fair, I choose to feature a student from the said university. She’s may not be one of the hallway chicks but I bet that she’ll be a good help in giving you some gist about being a state U student.

· What can you say about the controversies being faced by the PUP students and the PUP, itself?
The controversies about those students and the school itself are just like those issues that were sensationalized at first because of the institution involved. And will eventually die after some time.
· To top it all, can you say that you’re really proud of the school where you belong?
Definitely yes, I’m proud of my school. PUP is PUP. It’s one of a kind.

Sonny Versoza, 18, a resident of Taytay, Rizal is a third year student of Bachelor in Broadcast Communication. He’s the eldest of the three children of Orlando Versoza and Gloria Merle. His father earns 3 to 4,000 pesos a week as a company driver in C-E Construction. His mother on the other hand is a loving housewife and caring mother to him and to his two siblings Baby Anne, 12 and John Mark, 7.
He likes watching television and movies, listening to music and reading books. He particularly likes the movies A.I (Artificial Intelligence), Pirates of the Caribbean and Matrix. He also likes the music of John Mayer, Incubus and Switch foot. He reads any kind of books but he particularly likes Paulo Coelho and Mitch Albom.
Sonny started his education in Head Start Pre School then went to Addition Hills Elementary School in San Juan. He stayed there for two years but when they moved to another place, he transferred to Pinagbuhatan Elementary School in Pasig where he finished his elementary education. It is also where his sister and brother are studying at the present. Then he spent his four years of secondary education at Rizal High School in Pasig where he became active in different activities like Debate and Quiz Bees.
At the end of his fourth year, Sonny began searching for a school where he can pursue his college education. He took the entrance test of only two schools, University of the Philippines and Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Unfortunately, he didn’t pass the UPCAT but luckily he passed the PUPCET and decided to enter the University. He took up Bachelor in Broadcast Communication because he wants to be part of the media industry which is really his interest since time immemorial.
In his high school perspective, he expected PUP as a University with so many students. The University is very popular in their place since many of his teachers in High School are graduates of PUP. At first sight, he found it okay.
Since his first year in PUP- College of Communication, he has been an active member of Teatro Komunikado, a performing organization in the said College. He joined TK because of the influence of his friends who are also members of the organization.
As of now, he spends his vacant hours doing things for the Teatro, chat with friends, read books and surf the Nnet. He eats his lunch in Road 5 and chooses student meals because of its cheap price. He enjoys the Foundation Anniversary of the College and the University because of the many activities like seminars, concerts, pageants and academic contests.
For almost three years in the University, he believed that PUP shows the reality of life because it caters different people from different places with different personality and life stories. In his opinion, PUP is a kind of school that accepts all kinds of students.
After graduation, he plans to work in a company where he can practice what he had learned for four years either in Media or in Public Relations. When asked for his plan to help PUP few years from now, he said that if given a chance, he wants to share his knowledge and experience by being a professor in the University.
